Hibiscus International Academy

Hibiscus International Academy is an independent, co-educational learning centre located in Palm Road in Shelly Beach, KZN.

The Academy was established to cater for a growing demand on the KZN South Coast for a school offering an international curriculum.

The Academy will be offering the Cambridge Assessment International Education curriculum through a blended model strategy to Grades 7 – 12 pupils in 2019.


Hibiscus International Academy aims to nurture, guide and prepare young people to enable them to contribute to, and succeed in, a rapidly changing society.

To achieve our vision, we will follow a Christian-based value system inculcating the principles of honesty, loyalty and friendship while offering an internationally backed educational system.


Every family applying for admission to Hibiscus International Academy is given equal opportunity irrespective of gender, race, religion or cultural background.

Admission to the Academy will be conditional upon the following:

  • That the pupil meets the minimum academic standard and age requirement of the Grade being applied for. Pupils, who are more than two years older than the average age of their grade, will not be considered for enrolment.
  • A placement assessment appropriate for the Grade may be administered to determine the pupil’s academic profile as applicants must possess the required level of competence to cope with the Academy’s curriculum.
    Should a professional scholastic assessment be required, this will be at the parents’ expense.
  • That the pupil and parents agree and abide by the Hibiscus International Academy’s Code of Conduct.
  • That the parents have fully completed and signed the Hibiscus International Academy Application Form and returned it to the Academy with all supporting documentation.

The following regarding finances is important;

  • On processing the application, the Academy may undertake a credit check and may deem it necessary to refuse acceptance or to charge an additional term’s school fees to be held as a deposit and used in the event of a non-payment of school fees.

Admission to the Academy is at the discretion of the Head of the Academy or person delegated in the absence of the Head.

  • Parents complete and submit an Application for Enrolment.
  • An enrolment interview is conducted.
  • The pupil may be required to write an Entrance Exam (Maths and English)
  • Upon acceptance, a non-refundable enrolment fee of R3500-00 is due to secure placement.

The language of instruction at Hibiscus International Academy is English and all communication and correspondence from the Academy will be in English


Cambridge Lower Secondary
In 2019, Stages 7, 8 and 9, pupils will follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary education programme. This programme is aimed at learners aged 11 to 14 years (SA equivalent Grades: 7/8/9) and aims to build skills, knowledge and understanding in the key areas of English, Afrikaans, Mathematics and Sciences.

The following academic subjects must be taken by pupils in Stage 7, 8 and 9:

  • English First Language
  • Afrikaans First Additional Language
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences (Science/Biology)
  • Integrated curriculum (History/Geography, Arts, Economic and Managements Sciences)

Cambridge Upper Secondary
From 2020, Stage 10 and 11 pupils will follow the Cambridge Upper Secondary education programme which leads to the Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education).

IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year-olds (SA equivalent Grades: 10/11), attracting over 900 000 subject entries every year from 140 countries.

Cambridge IGCSEs are considered to be an excellent preparation for Cambridge International AS and A Levels.

The following academic subjects must be taken by pupils in Stage 10 and 11:

  • English First Language
  • Afrikaans First Additional Language
  • Mathematics

Pupils must also select at least THREE subjects from the subject package which will may include of subjects like:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art & Design
  • Business Studies
  • Computer Science
  • Information and Communication Technology

Cambridge Advanced
Cambridge Advanced consists of the Cambridge International AS (Advanced Subsidiary) and A (Advanced) Level qualifications and are taken by over 175 000 learners in nearly 130 countries every year. They are typically for learners aged 16 to 19 years (SA equivalent Grades: 12 and 13) who need advanced study to prepare for higher education.

Thousands of students use Cambridge International AS & A Levels every year to gain places at leading universities worldwide, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

Cambridge International AS and A Level curricula are flexible. It is possible to offer almost any combination from a wide range of subjects.

Cambridge International AS Level is typically a one year course and Cambridge International A Level is typically a two-year course. Some subjects can be started as a Cambridge International AS Level and extended to a Cambridge International A Level.

Hibiscus International Academy has chosen to opt for a less formal uniform that consists of:

  • a beige polo shirt with the HIA emblem embroidered onto it and
  • navy-blue chinos or
    • navy-blue Cargo, Chino or Bermuda shorts or
    • a navy-blue knee-length (not denim) skirt (for girls) and
  • plain dark track shoes.
  • Monday – Thursday:  07h45 – 15h00
    • Formal classes:                07h45 – 12h30
    • Integrated Curriculum: 13h00 – 14h00
    • Study period:                   14h00 – 15h00
      The Study Period forms a compulsory part of the school day. Pupils may be expected to attend extra classes, to complete their homework or study during these study periods. They are not regarded as “free” periods.
